Will sexy clothes make the twain meet

women's clothing evokes some nasty comments again. This time happened in the most unlikely of places - in a country that is considered a developed country and a city that is considered his masterpiece. Even as "mama" and "brain" joined the observation of garbage to an Iranian cleric that promiscuity, allegedly caused by revealing clothing, was the cause of earthquakes, a court ruling left Sydney women recovering of a huge mirror.

There was worldwide indignation when a Sydney court acquitted a man accused of raping a woman, saying their tight jeans could not have been taken without their consent. This, despite the medical reports indicate a severe physical trauma in the genital area. Can a woman with tight jeans being raped? How can it be removed without his consent? These were the questions asked the jury before allowing it to be the man.

Many thought that such a ruling from an Australian court was shocking. Human rights lawyer and activist Mahabala Kamayani Bali, however, disagrees. The suppression of the rights of women is a global phenomenon and no matter whether it is India or even the U.S., she says. ''The mentality is the same - in all cases of rape, if a woman is scantily clad, is cited by the opposing party as a defense. In the movie, Jodie Foster, the defendant, a girl who is drunk and 'poorly dressed' is raped and accused of "who so requests. The film was set in the U.S. - now that is as developed as you can get. As trafficking - developed, developing or underdeveloped, there is no difference,''says Mahabala.

Other activists also agree that in such cases, courts around the world behave the same way. ''It's definitely not a sensible decision. It seems to be a consequence of the position of judge in this case and sends a negative message on the rights of women. In this case, the judge seems to have taken a blow to women's rights,''said Ammu Abraham, an activist with the Center for Women, Mumbai. Student, University of Delhi Alia Ahmed agrees that the sentence gives a familiar note. ''It's ridiculous, but are not unaware of such observations. Women's clothing is always a talking point and, often, in cases of rape, is what leads women and their morale was discussed for the first time - other than the crime itself,''she said.

A global movement

When thousands of naked women to protest his claim cleft Iranian cleric Hojatoleslam Kazem revealing clothes Sedighi that caused the earthquake, which gave support to a given call educaby Jennifer McCreight.

An American student, supernatural attributes decidió''prueba McCreight cleric in the breast.''Like thousands of women in the West showed cleavage, some girls Delhi also provided support to the use of plunging necklines. ''I think it was a perfect way to protest against this. My friends and I wore plunging necklines to show our solidarity with Boobquake''said Indrani Singh, advertising professionals.

But it was certainly a leap forward for feminism or had only girls gone wild? Theta''The joke is a knee jerk reaction to a comment regressive - it definitely has an immediate impact, but for a long-term strategy against the elements, we must put our thinking caps more sustainable campaigns,''said Mahabala.

In a campaign that ran alongside Boobquake, Brainquake took social networking websites by storm. However, exactly how the divisions Boobquake change, yes. Brainquake creators say on your Facebook page that her goal is to get the shivering Iranian conservative leaders fear that the mujer''para drive change and to prosper despite género''apartheid. The homepage of the website shows Brainquake celebration of the life and achievements of women, ranging from politicians, celebrities and professional lay women.

Quirky PROTESTS

Quaking brain or tits? What is the best way? ''These two campaigns - those who did not feel comfortable about shaking her breasts decided to shake your brain. I do not think one was a response to the other,''says activist and photographer based in Mumbai Ramlath Kavila.

Abraham says there is a common thread in the Chaddi Rosado, Brainquake Boobquake and campaigns.

''We've reached a point in history where the only effective way and sometimes the only possible way to meet strangers, inflexible and their ideologies is through irreverence and parody. That is what connects the Rose Chaddi Boobquake and campaigns. The Iranian cleric was not questioning whether women had a brain or not,''said Abraham.

Some think that both campaigns missed the mark and the message was lost in the din. Both Boobquake and Brainquake''were a farce. In fact, the declarations of the clergy and should be ignored and we should not sensational. I have nothing to shake and quake,''said Varsha Mohan, students, Women's Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

However, Tulsi Mehta, a sociology student at Jawaharlal Nehru University believes that such protests at least draw attention to relevant issues. ''If not for a Boobquake who would have remembered such an insensitive statement made by a cleric who wants Talibanise women's rights? However, at the same time, it also trivializes the seriousness of the matter. We need more campaigns that make people get up and see,''said Mehta.

MORAL POLICE AT WORK

Ample examples of clothing dictates dotted successive instances of rape, sexual abuse and harassment are abundant in our own backyard.

Two years ago, observations of Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph immodest dress was a reason for increasing crimes against women, evoking the wide protest. ''Today, women wear dresses even the temples and churches - so when we go to places of worship, instead of meditating on God, we end up meditating on the person before us,''he said .

Recently, the Goa tourism department had issued an imposition to remove 'bikini girl' in their ads saying that it promoted the state as a destination for sex tourism Moral policing has always been at his best in schools and institutions educaby international. Pema Bhutia, a former student of Delhi Kirori Mal College, remembers the dress code introduced five years ago. The director of quality''proposed a dress code, especially for students woman northeastern states saying that wearing "revealing" clothing. His advice was that they should wear salwar kameez to prevent sexual harassment.''Sherin Thomas, a BA (Hons) from DU students says he has learned to deal with rude comments and jokes of men. ''I was told by my landlord to be aware of what I wore and how I behaved - there was even a time limit beyond which I could not go home!''Says Thomas, who is from Manipur.

Similarly, after a student at the University of Mumbai police she was raped by a drunken off-campus, the vice chancellor said that a dress code would reduce sexual harassment and to prevent violations caused por''''escasa clothes the student. Later, protests forced him to abandon the proposal.

In September 1997, co-educational Christ College in Bangalore banned girls from wearing jeans and short skirts, as they are called "indecent." The ban was withdrawn after much debate.

Shortly thereafter, the vice-chancellor of Anna University, Chennai, D Viswanathan, prescribed a dress code for students in 227 engineering schools that banned "tight dresses, skirts or sleeveless tops and jeans. The reason for the project was so that the clothes to distract students from academics.''Instead of punishing men for the rape and sexual harassment of women, statements like these men acquitted of the crime,''feels Mohan.

However, here is some good news from the Kolkata high court. Returning something like sanity, which banned state educational institutions to issue opinions on the dress code for school teachers. Now that is something to celebrate
